Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Guardsman register and grille cleaning in Houston typically runs $12 to $28 per register when done by a trained technician, with most whole-home jobs landing between $180 and $340 depending on how many vents you have and how long they’ve been ignored. We stock Guardsman-compatible register pulls, grille clips, and replacement filter media on our trucks, so most jobs finish same-day without a second trip. The usual way homeowners find us: they pull a register to vacuum behind it and realize the grille is bent, the clips snapped, or the whole unit is caked shut with years of Houston humidity plus dust that turned into paste.
Here’s the thing most people don’t realize: your registers are the last six inches of a very long airway. If the register itself is clogged or broken, the cleanest ducts in Texas won’t matter. Roy Castellanos has pulled registers in Energy Corridor homes that hadn’t been removed since the original build, and what’s behind them is rarely pretty. This page tells you what to look for, what it costs, and when it’s a ten-minute fix versus a real replacement.
Which Guardsman Models This Applies To
Guardsman builds registers and grilles in three main lines: the Standard Series (stamped steel, basic residential), the Premium Series (heavier gauge with reinforced damper blades), and the Decorative Series (cast aluminum and brass finishes for visible living areas). The cleaning approach changes by series. Standard Series units are cheap enough that if the frame is warped or the damper won’t hold position, replacement makes more sense than scrubbing. Premium and Decorative units are worth restoring because the metal is thicker and the finish costs real money to match.
To identify what you have, look at the back edge of the register. Guardsman stamps a two-letter series code there: ST for Standard, PR for Premium, DC for Decorative, followed by the nominal size (a 4×10, 6×12, and so on). That size is the hole in your floor or wall, not the faceplate, so measure the opening, not the visible part. The compatibility gotcha we see weekly in Houston: older homes here were framed for 3.25×10 registers, and Guardsman’s current Standard Series only comes in 4×10 and up. If you’ve got the old narrow size, you’ll need a retrofitting frame, which changes the job from a simple swap to a 30-minute modification. Aftermarket equivalents exist for Standard Series at about half the OEM price, but the damper hardware is lighter and tends to rattle within a year or two. For Premium and Decorative, we recommend staying OEM because the mounting points are proprietary. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Guardsman, but we work with their sizing system daily.

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
- The damper won’t hold position. You set it to half-open and it drifts shut by morning. The friction mechanism inside the Guardsman frame is worn, and cleaning alone won’t fix it. The damper assembly needs replacement or the whole register does.
- Visible rust or corrosion on the faceplate, especially near the edges. Houston’s humidity gets into bathroom and kitchen registers fast. Once the finish is compromised, surface cleaning buys you months, not years. Replacement is the honest answer.
- The grille won’t sit flush against the floor or wall anymore. The mounting clips have lost tension or the frame bent somewhere along the way. A register that rocks underfoot is a register that’s pulling dust in around the edges, bypassing your filter entirely.
- You can hear airflow but feel very little. The register face is clogged with a layer of dust so compacted it’s acting like a solid panel. This is the most common issue in Houston homes with pets and older ductwork.
- Snapped mounting clips or stripped screw holes. Once the clips go, the register becomes a trip hazard in the floor and a constant annoyance on the wall. Guardsman clips are replaceable on Premium and Decorative Series; on Standard, it’s usually cheaper to replace the entire unit.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For the vast majority of Guardsman register cleaning we do in Houston, you’re looking at $12 to $28 per register for a full remove, soak, brush, and reinstall. That assumes you’ve got standard sizes and the registers are intact. When a register needs replacement instead of cleaning, expect to pay $35 to $75 per unit for Guardsman Premium Series replacements, and $85 to $160 each for Decorative Series, depending on size and finish. Standard Series replacements are the budget end at $18 to $30 per register.
The price we quote before we touch a single register is the price you pay. That’s written down, line by line, and signed before work starts. Every cleaning and replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a register we cleaned clogs again within a year due to improper cleaning, we come back and redo it at no charge. If a replacement fails within the year, same deal. No fine print, no prorating, no “it’s the humidity’s fault.” We hand you the guarantee in writing because that’s how The Garrison Standard works.
DIY or Call Us?
Registers are one of the few air duct components where DIY is genuinely reasonable for basic cleaning. Pop the register out, vacuum both sides, wash it with warm water and mild dish soap, let it dry completely, and snap it back in. That’s a Saturday-morning job and it needs no special tools. But here’s where DIY goes sideways: if the damper mechanism is failing, if clips are broken, or if rust has set in, cleaning won’t restore function. And if you’re dealing with floor registers in a Houston home with crawl space access, you’re pulling up registers directly over whatever’s living under the house, which is a different conversation entirely.

FAQs
Every 6 to 12 months for most homes, and every 3 to 4 months if you have shedding pets or live near construction. Houston’s humidity means dust that would stay loose in a dry climate turns into a film that bonds to register faces faster here.
Yes, if the damage is limited to mounting clips or a damper that needs re-tensioning on Premium or Decorative Series models. Standard Series units are usually not worth the labor cost to repair, which is why we’re honest about replacement when the numbers don’t work in your favor. Call (713) 936-5800 and describe what you’re seeing; we’ll tell you which path makes sense.
A whole-home register cleaning on a typical 8 to 10 register Houston house takes about an hour and a half, including removal, cleaning, and reinstallation. If replacements are involved, add 15 to 20 minutes per unit. Most jobs are completed in a single visit.
We keep a rolling inventory of Guardsman Standard and Premium Series in the most common Houston sizes, plus clips and damper hardware for Decorative Series. If you need a size we don’t have on hand, we can typically have it within 2 to 3 business days through our supply channels. We also work with equivalent parts for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems when a mixed-brand home needs matching.
Clean air doesn’t announce itself, you just stop noticing the problem. If your Guardsman registers are doing their job, you never think about them. If you’re reading this, they’re probably not. Call (713) 936-5800 and we’ll get them squared away.
