Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We carry and install Aprilaire-compatible vent sanitizing components for Houston homes, with most replacements running $225 to $480 installed depending on your duct layout and access. If your sanitizing unit has stopped producing its telltale clean-air output or the indicator has gone dark, we can typically get a technician to your home within a few business days. Most Houston owners discover the problem the same way: the light on the unit stops working, or the air coming through the vents just doesn’t have that same post-cleaning freshness.
Roy Castellanos and our crew at Hollis Air Duct Houston handle this specific repair regularly. The Aprilaire vent sanitizing system is a solid piece of equipment, but Houston’s humidity and the fine particulate load from our air conditioning season means the UV bulb and the reflective chamber take more abuse here than they would in drier climates.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
The vent sanitizing components we replace most often are from Aprilaire’s 5000 series and the newer inline UV sanitizing line. Before you order a part, check the model label on the unit itself, not the air handler. Aprilaire stamps the model and serial number on the power supply housing, usually on the side facing away from the duct. If the label has faded or peeled, measure the mounting plate: the common residential units are 7 inches by 7 inches, while the larger commercial-style units run 9 inches square.
For Aprilaire specifically, OEM bulbs and chambers are worth the extra cost over aftermarket equivalents. The wavelength output on cheap replacement bulbs drifts within a few hundred hours, which means you’re paying for a light show instead of actual sanitizing. We stock OEM Aprilaire bulbs, ballasts, and replacement chambers on the truck for the most common models. Hollis Air Duct Houston is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Aprilaire, but we use their parts because the fit and output are consistent. We also keep compatible components for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems for homes with mixed equipment.

Signs Your Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing Is Failing
- The indicator light is off or flickering. This is usually the ballast going bad before the bulb itself. The ballast regulates current to the UV lamp, and in Houston’s heat, ballasts fail faster than the bulbs do.
- The bulb is lit but you notice no difference in air quality. UV bulbs lose output as they age. After roughly 9,000 hours of operation, the sanitizing effectiveness drops below useful levels even though the bulb still glows.
- A faint ozone smell near the return vent. This points to a degrading bulb coating or an aging chamber reflector, both of which mean the unit is working outside its intended range.
- Visible dust buildup on the bulb surface. A coated bulb can’t sanitize anything. This happens fast in Houston homes with older ductwork, especially in neighborhoods like Meyerland or Westbury where duct runs are long and leaky.
- The unit is humming or buzzing louder than usual. That’s typically a failing ballast or a loose mounting bracket vibrating against the duct. Left alone, it will take the bulb with it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, expect to pay between $225 and $480 for a complete Aprilaire vent sanitizing replacement, installed. A bulb-only swap runs $145 to $195. A ballast replacement lands between $180 and $260. If the entire chamber needs replacing due to corrosion or a cracked reflector, you’re looking at $320 to $480.
| Repair Type | Houston Price Range |
|---|---|
| Bulb replacement only | $145 – $195 |
| Ballast replacement | $180 – $260 |
| Full chamber replacement | $320 – $480 |
The range depends on access. If your unit is mounted in a tight attic closet in a Katy two-story, the labor runs higher than a ground-level utility closet in Spring Branch. Every Hollis Air Duct Houston job gets a written price before we touch anything, and that price covers the part, the labor, and a full year of coverage under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the part fails within that year, we return at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
The Aprilaire vent sanitizing system involves UV light and electrical components, so this is not a safe DIY repair for most owners. You should never look directly at an operating UV bulb, and the ballast holds a charge even after the unit is unplugged. What you can safely do is confirm the unit has power and note whether the indicator light is on, off, or flickering. That information helps us diagnose before we arrive.
Where DIY goes wrong is when an owner orders a cheaper aftermarket bulb online and installs it without replacing a failing ballast. The new bulb burns out within weeks, and the original problem is still there. We see it often enough that we now ask about it during the phone call. If you want to skip the guesswork, call us at (713) 936-5800 and we’ll get you scheduled.
FAQs
Expect 9,000 to 12,000 hours of useful sanitizing output, which translates to about 12 to 16 months of continuous operation in a Houston home. The bulb may still light after that, but its sanitizing effectiveness drops off sharply. Call (713) 936-5800 and we’ll check your unit’s hour meter if it has one.
Yes, in most cases the ballast or bulb is the failed component and the chamber itself is fine. We replace the failed part rather than selling a full system unless the chamber shows corrosion or reflector damage. We’ll show you the problem before we quote the fix.
Most Aprilaire vent sanitizing replacements take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on site. The slow part is usually getting to the unit, especially in Houston attics in summer when the temperature up there is 130 degrees or worse. We work around that by scheduling attic work earlier in the day.
We stock the most common Aprilaire bulbs, ballasts, and chambers on our trucks. For less common models, we can typically source the part within a few business days from our Houston distributors. Call (713) 936-5800 with your model number and we’ll confirm availability before you book.
