Aprilaire Coil Cleaning: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Aprilaire coil cleaning in Houston typically runs $180 to $420 depending on coil condition and whether we’re cleaning the evaporator coil in place or pulling it for a full wash. We stock Aprilaire-compatible coil cleaners and the tools to do this properly, and most Houston appointments can be scheduled within a few days. Most owners discover the need for coil cleaning the hard way: the AC runs longer, humidity creeps up, or the system ices over on a 98-degree afternoon in Katy or Sugar Land. What usually happened is a year or two of Houston’s humidity and dust loading the coil until airflow dropped enough that the system stopped doing its job.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Aprilaire directly, but we install and service their equipment alongside Honeywell, Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems every week. Roy Castellanos and our crew have been working on Houston homes long enough to know exactly what an Aprilaire coil looks like after 24 months of local air.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
This covers the Aprilaire 5000 series electronic air cleaners, the 2000 and 4000 series media air cleaners, and the Aprilaire whole-home dehumidifier line, models 1700 through 1800 series. The coil in question is typically the evaporator coil on the AC side of your system, which sits downstream of the Aprilaire unit and collects whatever makes it past the filter. In Houston, that’s more than most homeowners realize: fine clay dust, pollen from the oak and pine seasons, and enough humidity to turn any dust into paste on the coil fins.
When matching a coil to your Aprilaire setup, the critical spec is the coil’s depth and fin-per-inch count. Aprilaire units often pair with coils that run 3 to 4 tons of cooling capacity, typically 14 to 21 inches wide and 20 to 22 inches deep. The compatibility gotcha: Aprilaire dehumidifier coils are not interchangeable with standard AC evaporator coils, even if the cabinet dimensions match. An OEM Aprilaire coil will carry a model-specific part number on the drain pan or the end plate; an aftermarket coil must match both the tonnage and the physical cabinet footprint or you’ll get airflow leakage around the coil box. For most Houston homes, a quality aftermarket coil from ADP or Aspen is perfectly fine and costs $60 to $120 less than the OEM Aprilaire part, but if you’re under warranty, stick with OEM or you void it.

Signs Your Aprilaire Coil Cleaning Is Failing
- System runs constantly but the house won’t cool below 78. The coil is packed with enough Houston dust and pollen that airflow across the fins is down 30% or more. The refrigerant can’t transfer heat efficiently, so the unit struggles.
- Ice forming on the copper lines or the coil itself. This is the classic symptom of restricted airflow across a dirty coil. When the coil can’t absorb enough heat from the air moving past it, the coil temperature drops below freezing and the condensation freezes solid.
- Every drain pan fills fast and the float switch trips. A fouled coil doesn’t shed condensation cleanly. Water beads, drips erratically, and the pan fills faster than it should. In Houston’s summer humidity, this shows up quickly.
- Dust or biological growth visible on the coil through the access panel. When you can see gray fuzz or dark patches on the fins, you’re past routine maintenance and into a full cleaning. This is common in Houston homes with older Aprilaire units that haven’t been serviced since the Obama administration.
- Energy bill up 20% or more without a rate change. A dirty coil directly raises compressor workload and runtime. We see this in older Energy Corridor homes where the Aprilaire filter hasn’t been changed on schedule and the coil catches the overflow.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what coil cleaning costs in Houston, broken down so there are no surprises:
- Basic in-place coil cleaning: $180 to $250. This covers removing the access panel, applying a commercial-grade self-rinsing coil cleaner, flushing the coil, and treating the drain line. Best for mild buildup.
- Deep clean with coil combing: $250 to $340. This adds straightening bent fins by hand, applying a second cleaning pass, and checking the coil’s pressure drop before and after. Recommended for systems that haven’t been opened in 3+ years.
- Full coil pull and wash: $350 to $420. This requires recovering refrigerant, pulling the coil, washing it outside the cabinet, and reinstalling with a nitrogen pressure check. Only recommended when the coil is heavily fouled or if there’s reason to believe growth extends inside the cabinet.
The price is written down before we touch anything. That’s the Garrison Standard: a written quote before work starts, and that number does not move at the door. Every coil cleaning includes checking the Aprilaire filter condition and the drain line to the pan. If the problem comes back within a year, our 365-Day Done Right Promise means we return and make it right at no charge, including a free second visit.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely change your Aprilaire filter yourself, and you should: every 6 to 12 months in Houston. You can also check the drain pan for standing water. What you can’t safely do is open the coil access panel and start spraying coil cleaner without knowing what you’re looking at. The coil is under refrigerant pressure, the fins are sharp enough to cut, and the cleaning chemicals are strong enough to damage your skin and your lungs if you don’t know how to ventilate the area. There’s also a correct chemical for aluminum fins and a different one for copper. We’re not putting a DIY coil cleaning write-up out there for a reason. If the coil is visibly dirty, call us at (713) 936-5800 and we’ll get it cleaned right. Clean air doesn’t announce itself, you just stop noticing the problem.
FAQs
An Aprilaire evaporator coil in Houston typically lasts 12 to 15 years, but a coil that never gets cleaned can fail in 8. Houston’s humidity accelerates corrosion on coil fins, especially if the coil sits dirty and holds moisture against the metal for months at a time. A clean coil with proper Aprilaire filter changes is the difference. Call (713) 936-5800 if you want us to inspect yours.
Bent fins can be combed straight, and a minor leak can sometimes be repaired, but a coil with corrosion or heavy biological growth cannot be repaired. Cleaning fixes buildup; replacement fixes structural damage. If you’re not sure which one you’re looking at, call (713) 936-5800 and we’ll tell you straight. Estimates are free.
A standard in-place coil cleaning takes 60 to 90 minutes. A full coil pull and wash takes 3 to 4 hours including refrigerant recovery and recharging. We’ll give you a written time frame and price before we begin, and we arrive inside the window.
